Not a day goes by without an article about some sizzling new startup or the latest sexy perk that Google’s offering. Too bad you’re stuck freezing on the outside, your breath fogging up the glass as you look in at that roaring tech fire. After all, what tech company is going to hire a non-programmer like you? Turns out they all will. Because non-tech roles make up nearly 75% of all the jobs in the industry. After all, who’s going to support all those programmers by marketing and selling their programs? But first you need to figure out where you fit. And don’t worry, it’s not all just sales and marketing roles either. So here’s a cheat sheet to 5 scorching, unconventional jobs in the hottest industry around: 1) You’re a consultant As much as jean-clad techies like to make fun of corporate types and their suits, they hire ‘em by the boatload. Especially because it can actually be cheaper to “buy” a whole team of former consultants than rent them through their pricey firm. So if you’re a strategic consultant, check out a role called Business Operations (AKA “BizOps”). These are the brains behind big decisions like which country to expand to or which new product to launch. Which means lots of opportunities to show off your wicked Excel and PowerPoint skills! Which is where Corporate Development (AKA “CorpDev”) comes in. Because if you’ve got experience leading similar deals in other industries, chances are you can do the exact same thing in tech from sizing up opportunities to negotiating the perfect price. Welcome to the world of Business Development (AKA “BizDev” notice a theme here? ;). This role’s all about doing deals between two companies where they both come out stronger. 8 Ways to Survive Your Recruiter Office Romance Valentine’s Day is here and one of 2 things is likely are like to happen: Its time to book a restaurant, take out your significant other and then text/tweet on your respective smart phones. Easy! Its time to go out with your single mates and get totally annihilated (Undercover Recruiter always suggests you drink sensibly). We normally blog about tech, social etc… blah blah blah! Today we want to get a little soppy and talk about lurrrrrvve…or as recruiters used to call it in our day: “scoring”. #unit Apparently 80% of relationships start in the office (perhaps 81% finish there?). May I suggest that for recruiters that, yes, 80% may start there but then they kind of continue, trip and fall, end, start again and then either explode or implode (a little like the life cycle of a candidate?). Ive picked my brain (and maybe my history) and come up with some tips for surviving a recruiter office romance.  Here are 8 tips for recruiters to ensure that their office romance doesn’t get out of control! 1) Never go out in public: Stay hidden in one of your respective homes for at least 6 months! 2) At office parties totally slag each other off: Stay well clear of each other. 3) At office parties totally get off with each other: It is a party, isnt it? 4) Get spotted at IKEA? If you need to go to IKEA, and you’re spotted, have the following line ready: “we’re here to get cable trunking for the office”! 5)  Overcompensate at work: Give each other a really hard time! 6) Own really mainstreams cars: So,  when you follow each other in to work on the route that everyone else follows, you’re not spotted! Perfect! 7) Dont disappear together: Don’t disappear into the server room together to tidy the cables! We all know what youre doing! 8) Get married! Have kids and start your own business! There! Chasing Career Dreams in a Recession - Hire Imaging There is a famous poem by Langston Hughes with words that inspired an award winning play. He asked, What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? This is great food for thought for anyone in any career. Most people would not argue that we are living in tough economic times evidenced by layoffs, rising unemployment rates and dauntingly-high numbers of applicants for jobs. Summer may seem particularly scary. Schools out, bringing new college grads and high-school summer workers out in droves. If you are in a job search, you may think that this is a time when you should settle for whatever you can get. No, no, no! It may be in your best interest to take a bridge or stepping stone job”something to gain experience, hone skills or just put some money in the bank. Thats okay. But please dont stop there. My clients have shown me firsthand many success stories through economic and other obstacles. In times of adversity, they have focused on knowing what they wanted (dream), being one of the best at it, chasing it, and catching it! How? The pattern has been similar with their success stories: They aligned their talents with their dream jobs to stand out from the crowd. They showed great enthusiasm and passion for landing their dream jobs. They didnt give up. No matter what they were doing at the time, they kept searching. And when faced with opportunities, they reached out to grasp them. As you watch the video for the first or umpteenth time, think about why people were so quick to dismiss the hopes and dreams of another? I think its fear. We are often afraid to make fools of ourselves or to be vulnerable to rejection or failure. They were afraid for her. Yet, Susan wasnt afraid to put herself out there. The audience and judges laughed. Then, she opened her mouth and sang. Everything changed. Everyone wanted her to be good a standing ovation! Simon Cowell beamed with joy at the audiences reaction. But back up a bit. Prior to her singing debut, Susan sang in the shower and into hairbrushes. Shes 47 years old and never been kissed. She was an unemployed church worker. She took care of her parents until their deaths, and she lives with her cats. It could have been so easy to give up on her dreams of professional singing. Not this lady. She showed commitment and determination to follow her dream”and she caught it! She teaches us all a very important lesson. She walked on stage unashamed of who she is. She exuded confidence and even feistiness! Perhaps the world isnt as cold and scary as it sometimes seems. Perhaps people really do want to help. They do want you to succeed. What is your dream? Can you take a lesson from Susan Boyle? Will you choose to be a raisin in the sun or a chaser (and catcher) of dreams? The choice is yours.
